Oh, David Schlemko. The guy simply can’t catch a break… unless we’re talking about one of his bones.

Unfortunately for the Coyotes’ solid two-way defenseman, Schlemko’s upper-body injury Monday night against the Minnesota Wild is one more to add to a long list of the “whoa that looked like it hurt” variety. It was a flukey play in the 1st period, where it appeared that Schlemko was trying to get out of the way but went knee-on-knee against one of the Wild skaters and ended up grabbing his shoulder in pain as he left the ice. Based on first impressions the diagnosis isn’t good. He was seen wearing a splint and Coach Tippett wasn’t so optimistic about his condition.

Schlemko has faced long-term injuries before, being placed on the IR for a significant amount of time in each of the last two seasons. You can’t help but wonder what the guy could do in a full season – he’s a plus player, he quietly takes care of business in his own zone, but also has the ability to effectively jump into the offense and make some surprising “where the heck did that come from” plays.

He’s finally established himself as a solid NHL talent on the blueline, but Schlemko also has a great work ethic and a personality that embodies the Coyotes’ pack mentality. He’s a quiet, humble guy that works hard and has battled his way through the CHL, the AHL, and year after year finds himself having to fight off some younger prospects in the system during training camp (Stone, Rundblad, Summers) to earn his ice time and solidify his spot in the lineup.

Let’s hope Schlem isn’t out for long. Even if he is, he’s a scrappy guy and something tells me he will yet again find a way to earn his spot back in the lineup.

My proposal to Tippett, Small Group assignments

7 Nov

Our beloved desert dogs have been lacking chemistry and consistency, and while it’s foolish to think that Dave Tippett and his staff are not dreaming up line combinations in their sleep and agonizing over these decisions, it doesn’t hurt to offer a few suggestions.

So, brothers and sisters in Doan, I propose the following Small Group assignments for when everyone is healthy:

Wolski – Belanger – Whitney

Vrbata – Hanzal – Prucha

Upshall – Turris – Doan

Stempniak – Fiddler – Korpikoski

Bissonette / Pyatt are scratches

Our most gracious and benevolent captain, Shane Jesus Doan, should be interchanged with Korps depending on how he is playing. If he is angry Doan, he plays with Stemps and Fiddy. If he’s Mr. Slap Shot and skate in circles Doan, then he should be up there with Uppy and KT91. While Doan is NOT healthy, I hope that Korps plays with Turris and Uppy, and Pyatt can go back and hang with Fidds and Ovechniak.

Now go ahead and poke holes in that. Go ahead. Do it. I dare you.

There is absolutely no good reason to scratch Prucha and Turris instead of Biz and Pyatt, and I think this is what has drawn the ire of some OG Coyotes fans. Biz has his role and I love it when he gets some playing time, but let’s all be honest, he won’t be doing much more this year than dropping the gloves, tweeting, and Taco Bell commercials. Pyatt, on the other hand, had a couple of goals early in the year, but since then he has failed to pounce on his chances and put the puck in the net. He seems to be a big waste of space. He’s not hitting people and he’s not going to the front of the net to screen the goalie on point shots. In fact, I’m afraid at this point I’d rather have Winnik back on the team than Pyatt. Hopefully Taylor goes out there and proves me wrong.

In the mean time, Prucha has been scratched WAY too many times. While I’m still one of those crazies that thinks Whitney has good chemistry with Vrbata and Hanzal, it just isn’t producing the magic that the all-Czech line produced ALL SEASON LONG last year. With the exception of a small stretch towards the end of the season, the Czech line was solid and consistent, which is something we have been missing thus far from the boys in Coyote red. Just put the Czechs back together. At least put Prucha back in the lineup!

Our defense has been paired well, they just need to make smarter plays. Honestly, Lepisto, OEL, and Schlemko have played better defense than DeMo, Jovo, Yandle, and Aucoin. That’s kinda the opposite of how it should work. The veterans need to get it in gear.

Oh, by the way, don’t boo Z. It makes my baby Shane cry.

Doanisode III

4 Nov

Amy Jo (@Yotesgurl) and I talked about hockey by the pool for over 45 minutes on Halloween. It resulted in nearly 3 GB of video footage which was just too much for my poor new MacBook Air to handle. The result is this amazing 5 minute-ish clip that we will call Doanisode III! Enjoy.

O Sacred Head Now Suspended

20 Oct

It is a difficult time for the Doan Nation. A difficult time, indeed. Our leader, Shane Doan, was handed out a terribly unjust 3-game suspension from Pontius Campbell after a hit on some Duck.

Let us join with one another and rejoice for the hope that is within us until his return in Ottawa.

Doanisode II

17 Oct

You can catch our latest episode of the Doanation here on ustream.

The lighting is better this time, but, dangit… our video quality was worse. Our start to the show has kinda been like our start to the season. Sputtering and stumbly, but promising!

Doan Nation – Pilot Episode

26 Sep

Amy Jo (@Yotegurl) and I recorded our pilot episode of Doan Nation this afternoon, with the amazing help from @CKinAZ. We plan on doing these once every two weeks, so keep coming back for more!

Since this was our very first baby episode, we ran into all kinds of technical problems. The webcam kept freezing up, was down for maintenance, and for whatever reason every video got cut off towards the end after I uploaded them to youtube… but who cares!? We need the practice, and that’s what training camp and the preseason are for, right?

Please prepare your hearts as we enter into the Kingdom of Doan. All pilot episodes should start out this awkwardly ridiculous.

We made several roster cuts so that the coaching staff and GMDM didn’t have to today and tomorrow. (They can thank us later.) We have several ‘cuts’ of these cuts, since the aforementioned crappy wireless and webcam combo kept freezing up.

We will see tomorrow if the FOR REALSIES cuts match up with ours. What do you think, are we right or are we right?
